Ellis Charles "Bud" Helge

Ellis C. "Bud" Helge, of Upper Sandusky, died at 7:20 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012 Wyandot Memorial Hospital, Upper Sandusky. He was 83.
Born Aug. 17, 1928 in Caspian, Mich., he was a son of Ellis O. and Isabel (Kade) Helge, both deceased. He married Joyce C. Smith on Oct. 3, 1953 in Caspian and she survives in Upper Sandusky.
He also is survived by five children, John (Sarah) Helge, Manistee, Mich.; Mary Helge, Rossford; Christina (Ronald) Szydlowski, Napolean; E. Charles Helge, Hilliard; and Lynn Helge, Napolean; four grandchildren, Lindsay, Emmalyn, Chas and Erin; and a brother, David (Judy) Helge, Mundelein, Ill.
Mr. Helge was a 1946 graduate of Eagle River High School, Eagle River, Wis., where he spent his young adult life. He then went on to attend Michigan School of Mines, now Michigan Technological University, where he graduated in 1952. He worked as a division manager at National Lime and Stone for 28 years, retiring in 1990.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Occupation Forces in Korea from 1946-48.
Mr. Helge was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Upper Sandusky; where he had served as an elder.
He was a member of Warpole Lodge No. 176 F&AM; past master in 1976, McCutchen Chapter No. 96 R.A.M.; high priest 1973, Upper Sandusky Council No. 98 R&SM; past illustrious master 1972 and 1974, Marion Commandery No. 36, Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo; Zenobia Shrine Temple - Noble of the Mystic Shrine, Warpole Chapter Order of the Eastern Star No. 366, where he served as worthy patron; and the Upper Sandusky Lions Club. He also was a board member of Wyandot County Council on Aging and the American Institution of Mining Engineers.
Mr. Helge volunteered for the Boy Scouts and for many years with the American Red Cross Summer Swimming Program, where he taught many area youth basic swimming skills. He also was the 2002 Senior Citizen of the Year.
For hobbies, Mr. Helge enjoyed golfing and caning chairs. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lucas-Batton Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. Kenneth Wessler officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Upper Sandusky. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A Masonic memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home
